The Bahama Beach Club in Treasure Cay, Abaco, Bahamas welcomed actor and filmmaker Andy Garcia to the resort in July. Mr. Garcia, his wife Maria Victoria and their children enjoyed 7 days of fun-in-the-sun at the popular beachfront hotel located on what National Geographic called “one of the 10 best beaches in the world”!  The famous actor’s comments can be seen at: http://www.bahamabeachclub.com.

One of Hollywood’s most private and guarded leading men, Andy Garcia has created a few iconic characters while at the same time staying true to his acting roots and personal projects. Born on April 12, 1956, in Cuba, Garcia’s family was relatively affluent. When he was five years old, Fidel Castro came to power, however, and the family fled to Miami Beach.

He first began acting at Florida International University, but soon he was headed out to Hollywood. Andy García became known in the late 1980s and 1990s, having appeared in several successful Hollywood films, including The Godfather: Part III, The Untouchables and When a Man Loves a Woman. More recently, he has starred in Ocean’s Eleven, Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen.

Mr. Garcia says his family and he plan on returning to the Bahama Beach Club again next summer.

The German-built Schweers Senses 60-metre mega-yacht comes with a price tag of $260,000 U.S. per week. What does that get you on your way to the Bahamas?

Two 1,600-horsepower diesels power the yacht, giving it a cruising speed of 11 knots and a top speed of 14.8 knots. The ship weighs 1,143 gross tonnes and accommodates up to 12 guests. You also get toys — a helicopter, two Zodiacs, a power boat and at least one sailing boat were visible.

If you want privacy, hand-and-foot service, and plenty of options for water fun, this is a good choice.

Brad Harris of Southlake, Texas, won an 8½-hour tug-of-war with a monster blue marlin in the Bahamas on June 3, according to a Sun Herald report.

The fish weighed 904 pounds, the fourth-largest marlin documented in the Bahamas and the heaviest since 1986. That’s amazing! And there’s probably more where that came from because the Islands of the Bahamas does such a good job protecting its ocean environment, optimizing it for sea life to thrive.

According to the report, Harris was fishing in the Treasure Cay Leg of the Bahamas Billfish Championship series aboard a 65-foot Hatteras. Until June 3, his biggest fish was a blue marlin that was caught and released. Its estimated weight was 360 pounds.

It’s that time again. Better head down to Coconut Grove this weekend for the Miami/Bahamas Goombay Festival. This festival celebrates the Grove’s roots with an annual week-long party that transforms the Grand Avenue into Nassau Bay Street. You’ll see costumed junkanoo groups and dance to Caribbean rhythms, plus enjoy the arts and crafts. See you there!

Bollywood, another name for India’s film industry, has taken interest in the Bahamas as a location to film a new movie. The filming is getting underway in June, and will take place mostly in the island’s gin clear waters. The storyline features a shipwreck and treasure.

The Islands of the Bahamas has all the right ingredients to attract the film industry from any nation: beaches, sunlight, luxury resorts and more. It’s no wonder Bollywood is making its presence felt there.

Caribbean islands will create new protected areas for fish and coral reefs under a $70 million plan announced on Tuesday that will help safeguard tourism-backed economies.

“This is a trust fund for the future benefit of society,” Bahamas Minister of Works and Transport Earl Deveaux told Reuters of the project. “Our economy is based on tourism and our greatest natural resource is our environment.”

Inspired by a 2006 plan to protect part of the Pacific Ocean and a “Coral Triangle” project launched in 2007 for southeast Asia, nine Caribbean nations agreed to extend protected areas to 10 percent of their marine and coastal habitats by 2012.

Captain Rick Grasset recently hosted a group of nine anglers in South Andros. Here’s an excerpt from his memorable journey:

South Andros is flanked to the east by The Tongue of the Ocean, a deep-water trough that drops to more than 5,000 feet not more than a mile offshore. Along the edge of the drop lies the third largest barrier reef in the world. South Andros Island itself is riddled with innumerable tidal creeks and inland flats, all home to hundreds of thousands of hungry bonefish.

After getting settled, we learned legendary singer and songwriter Jimmy Buffett and a few friends would also be visiting for most of the week. Although they would be staying on Buffett’s 130-foot yacht, the Continental Drifter III, they would be sharing guides with us. Jimmy’s yacht arrived Saturday afternoon, followed by his Grumman Goose and Cessna Caravan float planes and private jet. Although we never had a chance to meet him, we did meet his first mate, Brian, and had numerous fly bys during the week.

Frank and I, along with our guide, Fredlon, drove up to the yacht, anchored off Jackfish Channel, on the way back to the lodge one afternoon and were in awe of the huge yacht and the Hell’s Bay Marquesas flats boat tethered to its stern. Although we hoped to meet and share a Landshark beer with him, it was fun keeping up with their daily catches through guides Josie and Charlie.
